The Selection Suggestion of Rake Angle and Relief Angle for Turning Tools

1) Principles for selecting rake angle (γ0)

The size of the rake angle mainly solves the conflict between the robustness and sharpness of the carbide tool. Therefore, the rake angle must first be selected according to the hardness of the material being processed. If the hardness of the work pieces is high, the rake angle should take a small value, otherwise it should take a large value. Secondly, the rake angle should be considered according to the machining properties. The rake angle should be a small value during rough machining and a large value during finishing. The rake angle is generally selected between -5° and 25°.

 

2) Principles for selecting relief angle (α0)

Firstly, considering the processing properties. During finishing, the relief angle takes a larger value; during rough machining, the relief angle takes a smaller value. Secondly, considering the hardness of the processed material. If the hardness of the work pieces is high, the main relief angle should be a small value to enhance the robustness of the tool; conversely, the relief angle should be a small value. The relief angle cannot be zero degrees or negative, which is generally selected between 6° and 12°.
