17 Tips for Milling Application

1. Check the power capacity and machine tool rigidity to ensure that the machine tool can use the required Milling Cutter diameter.

2. Workpiece stability,workpiece clamping conditions etc.

3. Keep the tool overhang on the spindle as short as possible during overhang machining.

4. Use the correct milling cutter pitch which is suitable for the process to ensure that there are not too many blades involved in cutting, otherwise it will cause vibration.

5. When milling narrow workpieces or gap milling, make sure there is sufficient inserts engagement.

6. Wherever possible, use indexable inserts with positive rake angles to ensure smooth cutting action and minimum power consumption.

7. Ensure the correct feed for the insert by using the recommended maximum chip thickness to achieve the correct cutting action.

8. Use climb milling as much as possible in the cutting direction.

9. Workpiece material and configuration, as well as quality requirements of the surface to be machined.

10. Insert material selection: Select the geometry and material according to the workpiece material type and application type.

11. Vibration-damped milling cutters for longer overhangs exceeding 4 times the tool diameter, the vibration tendency will become more obvious. Using vibration-damped milling cutters can significantly increase productivity.

12. Choose the most appropriate main declination angle.

13. Select the correct diameter according to the width of the workpiece.

14. Position the milling cutter correctly.

15. Milling cutter cut-in and cut-out can be seen that through arc cut-in, the chip thickness when retracting is always zero, thus enabling higher feeds and longer tool life.

16. Use coolant only when deemed necessary. Milling generally performs better without the use of coolant.
